COLLECTIONS
Collections and your credit
A collection raises two separate questions: is the debt valid, and is the credit reporting accurate?
Validation and disputes
Debt validation concerns the collector’s claim. A credit report dispute concerns inaccurate information in a consumer report.
Before paying
Confirm the collector, original creditor, amount, ownership, and relevant dates. Understand any agreement in writing before sending money.
Deletion promises
Paying or settling does not automatically guarantee deletion from a credit report. Avoid anyone who promises a result they do not control.
When to get help
State time limits and collection rules vary. For advice about a particular debt or lawsuit, contact a qualified consumer attorney or reputable nonprofit counselor.
