DISPUTE PREP

What documents support a credit dispute?

Useful evidence connects the specific item on your report to reliable records showing what the information should say.

Important: This guide is educational and is not individualized legal or financial advice.

Start with the report

Include a copy of the relevant report page and clearly mark each disputed item. Note the report confirmation number and account number when available.

Match evidence to the error

Choose records that directly address your claim.

  • Account statements showing the correct balance or status
  • Bank records or receipts showing when a payment was made
  • Letters confirming an account was closed, transferred, or corrected
  • Identity documents when the report belongs to someone else
  • An FTC identity theft report when fraud is involved

Send copies, not originals

Keep the original documents and a complete copy of the dispute packet. Redact information that is not needed, while leaving enough detail to identify you and investigate the account.

Make it easy to review

Use a numbered list when disputing several items. For each item, state what is wrong, why it is wrong, what correction you want, and which document supports the request.
