REPORT ERRORS

How to dispute a credit report error

A strong dispute identifies a precise error, explains why it is wrong, and includes evidence that supports the correction.

Important: This guide is educational and is not individualized legal or financial advice.

Before you file

Circle the item on a copy of your report. Gather statements, payment records, identity documents, or letters showing the correct information.

Contact both sides

The CFPB recommends disputing with the credit reporting company and the business that supplied the information. Include copies—not originals—of supporting records.

What to include

Make the request easy to investigate.

  • Your full name and contact information
  • The report confirmation number, if available
  • The account and exact information disputed
  • Why it is inaccurate
  • The correction requested
  • Copies of relevant supporting documents

After you submit

Keep a copy and proof of delivery. Review the result carefully. If the response is incomplete, you may add a statement to your file or seek qualified help.
